COM3161 Operating Systems

This course extends the knowledge gained in the courses "Computer Workshop", "Computer Architecture and Organization", "UNIX Environment", and "Data Structures and Algorithms I" to enable students to understand the theoretical concepts of operating systems. The knowledge gained in this course will be applied to the course "Systems Administration".

On completion of this course students should be able to:

• acquire the theoretical concepts of operating systems;
• acquire and apply the important principles of resource management provided by operating systems;
• identify the functions and facilities of operating systems;
• acquire the design trade-offs of operating systems;
• evaluate commercial operating systems and select an operating system for a specified application and system configuration.
