COM2171 - UNIX Workshop

The areas of study include history of UNIX, shells and commands, I/O redirecting and pipelining, job and process control, file permissions, file links, X Window, vi editor, accessing the Internet with Web browsers, and shell scripts.

On completion of this course students should be able to:

• know the history of UNIX and the different kinds of UNIX shells;
• operate the different releases and versions of UNIX assuredly;
• have confidence and competence in the use of different types of software under UNIX;
• access Internet with Web browsers and powerful commands (such as telnet, ftp, finger, talk, elm, and nn) under UNIX;
• write UNIX shell scripts to solve complicated problems.
